What is self-expectation?
Self-expectation is a standard that you set for yourself, or a belief about what you will do in the future. It could relate to work, your studies or other parts of your life.
Why is it important to manage self-expectations?
Managing self-expectations is important because:
- Having high self-expectations can be helpful – it can give us a sense of direction and motivation, or help us to meet high standards
- Sometimes, we set expectations for ourselves which are unrealistic. This can cause a lot of stress and self-criticism and might demotivate us if we feel we are not living up to them
So, it is important to balance our expectations with reality and not be too hard on ourselves if we sometimes don’t meet them.
