Hello, my name is Peter Owino. I have been in the field of research and Professional writing for the past five years. To this point, my experience in research has been incredible. I’ve grown so much both in my skills and my knowledge, but like everything in life, it hasn’t been an easy journey because of the challenges and the realizations you face.
You have to improve yourself and improve your skills in research as you go along. Just to give you a background of what I’ve been doing, I majorly do proposals, research papers for organizations, individuals doing their Masters Degrees and PhDs. Okay, so I don’t do all the work for them, don’t get me wrong, what I do is conduct the research on their behalf, I point them towards the direction they need to follow. Many people don’t really understand what research is because there are so many misconceptions about online writing or online research.
Let me address some of these misconceptions first.
The first thing that comes to many people’s minds is that you’re doing people’s assignments. No. That’s actually not the case. The field is so wide and there are so many people who venture into it just being research assistants to organizations and companies and such. The main challenge I’ve faced over the years is really getting to know what constitutes a good research paper. Just to take you through a few aspects, the most important thing is polishing your research skills.
By research skills I mean, there are those who will just get a topic or a subject area, then they go to the internet research look at other people’s work and write, take other people’s idea, take them as their own. When you’re doing research, you need to be very careful. Because most of the time these topics we write about, many people have already written about them. It’s very important to understand when you can take another person’s ideas and use them in your paper.
One thing that I’ve learnt and is also very important is to use other people’s ideas carefully. You can use other people’s ideas, but just use them to inform or to expound on your own. Plagiarism is one of the most unethical aspects of research. When you’re conducting research, always make sure you are as original as it gets. Using other people’s ideas should only help you expound or justify your own ideas. Always give them credit for their works, this actually constitutes use of their intellectual property, so, always make sure you credit other people’s work when you quote it in your own research papers.
Another important aspect is grammar because when someone is reading your paper, the first thing that really catches their attention is how well you articulate your points and your ideas. Using poor grammar can put so many readers off and can be very detrimental to your work.
Improve your Grammar.
Honestly, I cannot stand an article that has too many grammatical errors. Because you stop focusing on the ideas they have and you focus more on their language and their grammar. This beats the whole point. Always, try to use perfect grammar. There are very many valuable tools online that can help you improve on the grammar in your research papers and online writing projects. One is Grammarly, they will help you get rid of the few grammar mistakes in your paper, help you form better sentences and even write much clearly. And on matters of Plagiarism, there is Turnitin that can inform you on the level of plagiarism in your paper.
There are so many things to explore in research. And I think research helps build your knowledge base and helps you have different perspectives on different subjects of life because I enjoy working on these Philosophy, Psychology and Law papers. Getting to know other people’s perspectives, people’s ideas, you get to understand the world more and you even get a glimpse into human nature.
Personally, my experience in the research field has been amazing. I’ve really improved my skills and knowledge of different things. It’s something I encourage people to go into, to really get to better understand new things and different aspects of life. The misconceptions about research are many, I think people should understand that this area is very wide. And it’s not just doing other people’s assignments as some researchers do, the possibilities are endless. You can be a research assistant to people, help them get the right research materials, articles, point them in the right direction in their research papers. Basically, that’s what I’ve been doing and I’ve had an amazing experience doing it.
I recently made a decision to improve my Professional writing skills even more and enrolled on The Professional Writing Masterclass hosted by Village2nation Academy and instructed by Beatrice Wambui Mbugua.
